How often do we just sit in silence?

We are so used to being surrounded by noise.
We somehow feel comforted by it, and can feel uncomfortable when there is no background noise.  Why do we feel the need to have constant noise around us?
What is there to fear about silence?

Absolute peace is both internal and external silence.
But the most important silence is internal.
A lack of inner noise is essential to be at peace.
If you have inner silence, you are able to filter
out external noise quite easily.

You might feel that silence is somewhat boring and wish to keep yourself entertained by listening to music or chat on the radio.
I would like to suggest that you try silence for just one day.
Whenever you have the opportunity  turn off the tv or radio.
Do whatever you are doing in silence.

I expect that you read in silence. The next time that you are about to read a book or magazine or newspaper,  allow about 5 minutes to truly enjoy the silence.
This may only be possible at night before bedtime, or first thing in the morning before everyone else wakes up.
Ideally we would all start and end each day with quiet contemplation.

The more that you pay attention to silence, the more beautiful it becomes.

With silence and stillness, comes peace.

Mindfulness
Thich Nhat Hanh

Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment.
It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing. We bring our body into harmony while we wash the dishes, drive the car or take our morning shower.
